(For Cindy and Steve)

May I not be the first by whom the advice
Is given that marriage is the complicated
Condition in which two people have agreed to spice
Their young lives with each other's? So stated,

What is simpler? But the idea does not seize
The utterly civilized accommodation of the fact.
It is hard enough, in these times, in these
Troubled and terrible times, to live and act

As one. Yet the civilized accommodation
Must be made and people must, must understand
That if we are to live at all -- in marriage, as nation --
How do it better than with two young people and a wedding band?
