THE WINDOW

As he stared out of the window
the conviction steadily grew
that his entire life, which
had been spent in saving
pennies against a rainy day
had been wasted, because outside
the weather had been getting
sunnier and sunnier.

The day then came when he,
convinced that life had
all the time been beautiful
and that all his savings now
had been savagely dissipated
by the sun, now in despair
looked below, and, regurgitating
all his possibilities, jumped.
